States), travel and border management. The Can/Am BTA depends on the

opportunity for First Hand Briefings on Canadian Government activities

largest trading partners.

2-4, 1997 - The Austin, Texas Session Summary
This conference was the
first time that the major North/South and East/West Connector Gateway Trade
Corridor Highway Coalitions met in one forum.
An impressive array of speakers briefed attendees on ISTEA, NEXTEA, Federal DOT
Programs, Trade Flow, Corridor Development and Transportation Project and
Program Development initiatives and activities.

An impressive array of
senior Canadian and U.S. government official updated members on Transportation,
Trade and Border Management activities and initiatives.
- Can/Am BTA was acknowledged for:
- "being a distinguished group of leaders from the private and public
sectors regarding policies and issues pertaining to Canada-U.S. Trade."
- "playing a significant role in the development of Canadian policy;"
- " We look forward to working with the Can/Am BTA on future Canada U.S.
transportation initiatives, which could include joint assessment of
transportation network proposals and development of compatible or harmonized
standards and revelations for commercial vehicles. The vision is for
continent - wide transportation network that ensures the benefits of
integration are fully realized."

14, 1997 - The Washington D.C. Work Session Summary
The CAN/AM BTA is a
unified border-wide voice composed of integration of regional views, needs and
balanced input provided by members (both private and public). Members
participate in US/CANADA trade, border crossing, transportation and in every
sector of operation and use including shippers, producers, carriers, brokers,
operators of border crossing gateways and trade corridors. CAN/AM BTA depends
on the participation and funding provided by members to accelerate momentum and
achieve results.
WASHINGTON. D.C. CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
* Senior Government officials provided updated status on planned initiatives
with candid dialogue on issues of Transportation, Trade and Border Management
activities with members Can/Am BTA was acknowledged by speakers for:
1) Being a key player in keeping both the U.S. and Canadian Governments focused
on strategies to meet current and future border crossing needs.
2) Playing an important role with a proven credible ability to understand the
workings of the border and facilitating joint efforts to attain results.
3) Successful initiatives raising the profile of the U.S./Canada border while
helping to facilitate solutions.
4) For its participation, contacts and close working relationships, "the
Can/Am BTA was among the first to identify the serious congestion that will
occur at the Canada/U.S. border if the U.S. Government proceeds to implement
the new entry/exit documentation system as proposed" (Section 110 IRRIRA).
